Short Safaris

Day Trip To Arusha National Park

Just a short drive from Arusha town lies one of Tanzania’s most underrated treasures Arusha National Park. Though compact in size, the park offers an astonishing range of ecosystems and breathtaking scenery, from the lush slopes of Mount Meru and misty rainforests to open savannah, crater lakes, and the tranquil Momella Lakes. This is one of the few parks in Tanzania where you can combine game drives, walking safaris, and canoeing, all in one day. Unlike the vast savannahs of Serengeti, Arusha National Park is intimate and serene, making it perfect for travelers seeking a short yet rewarding wildlife experience. The park is home to giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, warthogs, and a variety of antelope species, as well as black-and-white colobus monkeys and over 400 bird species. On clear days, the snow-capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro can be seen to the east, while Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second-highest mountain, towers above the park. This day trip is ideal for those with limited time who want to begin or end their Tanzanian adventure with a close-up look at nature. Arusha National Park is also the only park in the northern circuit where guided walking safaris are offered an opportunity to connect with the wilderness on foot, accompanied by an armed ranger and expert guide.
Arusha National Park Park Day Trip
Morning: Departure & Game Drive in the Forest and Grasslands

Your adventure begins with an early morning pick-up from your hotel in Arusha or Moshi. After a short drive to the park, you’ll register at the gate and start your safari with a game drive through the montane forest, where moss-draped fig trees shelter shy bushbuck, blue monkeys, and troops of energetic colobus monkeys. Continue into the Ngurdoto Crater area, a forested mini-caldera with marshy floor plains often visited by buffaloes and warthogs. Keep your camera ready for scenic views and bird sightings along the way. The peaceful atmosphere and changing terrain make the morning drive truly magical.

Afternoon: Momella Lakes & Optional Walking or Canoeing Safari

By midday, you’ll reach the sparkling Momella Lakes, a chain of shallow alkaline lakes famous for their stunning hues and rich birdlife. Flocks of flamingos, Egyptian geese, herons, and kingfishers can often be spotted here. This is also a great area to see giraffes gliding gracefully across the open landscape. You’ll enjoy a scenic picnic lunch near one of the lakes before choosing an optional activity: either a short guided walking safari with a park ranger through the plains and forest edges, or a canoe safari on Momella Lake for a tranquil experience with up-close views of wildlife and birds along the shoreline.

Evening: Final Game Drive & Return to Arusha

As the afternoon light softens and animals become more active, enjoy a final leisurely game drive back through the park. With a bit of luck, you may catch more wildlife sightings, including waterbuck, bush pigs, or even a distant glimpse of leopards or hyenas. On clear days, you’ll enjoy stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro glowing in the evening sun. After exiting the park, you’ll be driven back to Arusha or Moshi, arriving by early evening with wonderful memories from your immersive day in one of Tanzania’s most scenic national parks.
