6 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Trek – Marangu Route

The Marangu Route is one of the most popular and oldest Kilimanjaro climbing trails, offering trekkers a more comfortable experience with overnight stays in mountain huts rather than tents. Known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” it is favored for its gentle ascent profile, which increases the chance of acclimatization. Although it is the only route with hut accommodation, it should not be underestimated—it’s still a serious high-altitude trek. This 6-day itinerary includes an acclimatization day at Horombo Hut, increasing your chances of summit success. You’ll journey through lush rainforest, expansive moorland, and the stark alpine desert, culminating with a summit push to Uhuru Peak—Africa’s highest point. Each day of the Marangu Route unveils Kilimanjaro’s dramatic ecological zones and breathtaking vistas. With a steady climb and well-maintained trail, this route is suitable for first-time climbers and those who prefer hut lodging over camping. Your guides and porters will ensure a safe and supported journey from start to finish.
Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
  • Hike Time: 4–5 hours
  • Altitude Gain: 1,860m to 2,700m
  • Overnight: Mandara Hut

Begin your Kilimanjaro adventure at Marangu Gate, where you’ll register with the park authorities. The trek starts through the lush rainforest, where you may spot blue monkeys and colorful birds. The trail gradually ascends to Mandara Hut, located in a forest clearing. In the afternoon, take an optional side trip to Maundi Crater for views of Kenya’s interior. Enjoy dinner and rest in the mountain huts.

  • Hike Time: 6–8 hours
  • Altitude Gain: 2,700m to 3,720m
  • Overnight: Horombo Hut

Leaving the forest behind, you enter moorland filled with giant heathers and open grasslands. The trail offers magnificent views of Mawenzi and, on clear days, Kibo Peak. This longer hike aids acclimatization. Arriving at Horombo Hut, you’ll rest and enjoy stunning sunsets and starry skies. Dinner is served in a communal dining hall.

  • Hike Time: 3–4 hours (optional hike)
  • Altitude: 3,720m (with optional hike to 4,000–4,400m)
  • Overnight: Horombo Hut

Today is a crucial acclimatization day. After breakfast, take a short hike towards Zebra Rocks or the saddle area to help your body adjust to the altitude. These hikes provide fantastic views and increase your chances of summit success. Return to Horombo for a hot lunch, rest, and preparation for the high-altitude trek ahead.

  • Hike Time: 6–8 hours
  • Altitude Gain: 3,720m to 4,703m
  • Overnight: Kibo Hut

Today’s hike is a steady ascent through the alpine desert, passing the “Last Water Point.” As vegetation thins out, the landscape becomes stark and dramatic. You’ll reach Kibo Hut by afternoon and rest early in preparation for the midnight summit attempt. Your guides will brief you and prepare a light dinner.

  • Hike Time: 11–14 hours (summit and descent)
  • Altitude Gain: 4,703m to 5,895m (Uhuru Peak), then down to 3,720m
  • Overnight: Horombo Hut

At midnight, begin the challenging summit push under the stars. The steep switchbacks lead you to Gilman’s Point on the crater rim (5,685m), where the sun begins to rise. Continue along the rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m)—the roof of Africa. Celebrate briefly, then begin the long descent to Kibo and onward to Horombo Hut for a well-earned rest.

  • Hike Time: 6–7 hours
  • Altitude Loss: 3,720m to 1,860m

After breakfast, descend through moorland and rainforest to Marangu Gate. You’ll receive your summit certificate and say farewell to your crew. A vehicle will transfer you back to Arusha or Moshi for a warm shower and celebration.
