5-Day Mikumi & Nyerere Safari | Fly-out to Zanzibar

Explore the wild heart of Southern Tanzania on this immersive 5-day safari adventure through Mikumi and Nyerere National Parks, culminating in a scenic flight to the paradise island of Zanzibar. This journey blends classic game drives, walking safaris, and boat excursions across two of the country’s most wildlife-rich and least-crowded parks. Mikumi National Park, often dubbed the “little Serengeti,” offers open savannahs teeming with elephants, lions, zebras, giraffes, and more—all set against the backdrop of the Uluguru Mountains. Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve)—Africa’s largest protected wilderness—presents raw, remote beauty, river ecosystems, and thrilling boat safaris along the Rufiji River. This safari offers a quieter, more intimate connection with nature than the busier northern circuit. Ending with a fly-out to Zanzibar adds the perfect finishing touch. After days of exhilarating wildlife viewing, you’ll soar over coastal landscapes to the spice-scented island, where you can continue your journey with relaxation, romance, or beachside exploration.
Day 1: Depart Dar es Salaam – Game Drive in Mikumi National Park

Leave Dar es Salaam early and drive (or fly, if preferred) to Mikumi National Park—a 5-hour journey through scenic countryside. Upon arrival, enjoy your first game drive across the Mkata Floodplain, famous for its abundant wildlife and excellent visibility. Spot giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, elephants, wildebeests, and possibly lions or leopards. After a bush picnic or hot lunch, continue the safari into the afternoon before heading to your lodge or tented camp.

Overnight in Mikumi

After an early breakfast, spend a full day exploring Mikumi’s diverse terrain. Venture into less-frequented areas where predators like lions and hyenas roam, and enjoy excellent birdwatching in the miombo woodlands and hippo pools. The park’s open landscape allows for clear, exciting game viewing and fantastic photography opportunities. Take a picnic lunch in the wild, then continue your afternoon drive before returning to camp for a warm dinner under the stars.

Day 3: Transfer to Nyerere National Park (Selous Game Reserve)
Today, travel south toward Nyerere National Park. This can be done via road (a 6–7 hour scenic drive through remote landscapes) or a short charter flight depending on your preference. Arrive in the afternoon and check into your lodge or camp nestled along the Rufiji River. After some rest, enjoy a sunset boat safari, gliding past hippos, crocodiles, and exotic birds while the golden light reflects off the water—an unforgettable start to your Selous experience.

Overnight in Nyerere

Day 4: Walking Safari & Game Drive in Nyerere
Begin your day with a thrilling guided walking safari, led by armed rangers and experienced guides. This up-close encounter with the bush introduces you to animal tracks, medicinal plants, and the rhythms of life on foot. After breakfast back at camp, embark on a game drive through the park’s remote savannahs and woodlands, searching for elephants, wild dogs, lions, giraffes, and more. Enjoy a picnic lunch in a scenic spot before returning in the late afternoon.

Day 5: Morning Game Activity & Fly-Out to Zanzibar
On your final safari morning, enjoy one last early game drive or a relaxing boat safari depending on your flight time. Then, transfer to the nearby airstrip for your scheduled or chartered flight to Zanzibar. Watch the wilderness transform into coastline as you soar above Southern Tanzania. Upon landing in Zanzibar, you’ll be transferred to your beach hotel, where the next chapter of your adventure begins—white sands, turquoise waters, and Swahili island charm.
